During this period I was a young artist desperately in search for answers. At this time, I felt the contemporary focus on art as research was a dubious prospect. Yet all around me young Lasalle graduates were focusing on making art that was subservient to headline topics such as post-colonialism and feminism, topics I didn’t feel drawn to or qualified to wrap my art around (especially the latter one). I searched internally and found myself honestly drawn to painting what I found beautiful around me—and I convinced myself that it was enough and poured myself into Still-life.
